Spot Sharing Terms
Version 2026-10-31
The short version
Sharing a spot is optional. Your photo never leaves your phone. On your iPhone, DummyShot turns it into an ink-and-watercolour drawing of the scene and a set of green guide lines with the people removed. Only those two pictures and a few numbers are sent. People in the drawing are redrawn as a sketch, but someone who knows them may still recognise them, so only share pictures everyone in them is happy to have shown. You can delete everything you've shared at any time.
What is sent
- An ink-and-watercolour drawing of the scene, made on your phone. People stay in it as faceless figures (so others can see how to pose): on every face the app finds, the eyes, eyebrows and mouth are painted over with plain skin tone (the outline of the face and the nose stay; eyes already hidden behind dark sunglasses are left as they are). Hair, clothes and build stay, so someone who knows them well might still guess who it is
- Green guide lines of the scene, made on your phone, with people removed
- Where you stood (the photo's location) and which way you pointed the camera
- The zoom you used and the time of day (for example "golden hour, evening")
- The spot name and tip you type, if any
- The name or nickname you choose to show as "Shared by", if any. Everyone who sees the spot sees it, along with how many people checked in at the spot
- A random ID for this installation of the app, your iPhone model and the app version
What is never sent
- The photo itself, or any other photo
- Any names, or anything that links the people in the drawing to who they are
- The photo's hidden details (camera data, exact date and time, location tags inside the file)
- Your name, email, Apple ID or contacts. We don't know who you are.
Your promises
- You took the photo the pictures are made from.
- Faces are removed automatically, but if a face was missed, or someone could still be identified by something else (a name tag, a uniform with a name, a very distinctive look), you pick another photo. No personal details (names, addresses, number plates) can be read.
- The spot is somewhere people are allowed to be, and standing there isn't dangerous.
- The name, tip and "Shared by" name don't include anyone else's personal information or anything offensive, and don't pretend to be someone else.
- Sharing it doesn't break any law or anyone else's rights (for example copyright, privacy, or rules of a private place).
- It doesn't show the inside of private homes or number plates, and children aren't the subject of the picture.
What we may do with it
By sharing, you give DummyShot a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to review, show, resize, crop and use the drawing, guide lines, location, direction, zoom, time of day and tip in the app, on dummyshot.com and in DummyShot's own posts, so other people can find and shoot the spot. You keep any rights you have in your photo; we never receive it.
The licence ends when you delete the spot, except for posts we've already published and copies we must keep for legal reasons.
Shared spots appear on the map right away and are checked by us afterwards. Some are held back until we've looked at them, for example when they look automated. We may edit the name or tip, or decline or remove a spot, for any reason.
Reports and copyright
Anyone can report a spot from the app. Spots reported by several people are hidden until we've checked them. Copyright owners can also use our Copyright Policy. We stop accepting spots from installations that share infringing or abusive material.
Removing what you've shared
In the app: Spots → Your shared spots → Delete all. This removes every spot shared from this installation, its pictures and the installation's record from our server. If you delete the app first, email privacy@dummylab.app with the spot's name and roughly where it is.
Safety
Spots are suggestions from other photographers. We don't check that a spot is safe, legal to visit or still accessible. Always check local rules, stay on paths, respect private property and never put yourself or anyone else in danger for a photo. You visit spots at your own risk.
These Spot Sharing Terms are part of our Terms of Use, including its limits on liability and its arbitration section.
